Dr Matthew Blake is an award-winning Clinical Psychologist located at the Hills Medical in Olinda, Melbourne.
Matt has lived in the Dandenong Ranges for many years and is passionate about providing evidence-based and affordable psychological services to the local community. As such, he is committed to providing ongoing and affordable therapy to all patients, not just to those who can afford to pay.
Matt enjoys working with adolescents and adults from a range of backgrounds. He takes a holistic, flexible, and pragmatic approach to therapy, focusing on biological, psychological, and social factors known to affect mental health. He personalises interventions to the individual and believes in collaboration and building intention to change.
Matt primarily takes a cognitive-behavioural approach. The main premise of cognitive-behaviour therapy is that mental health problems can develop because of learnt ways of thinking and behaving and that learning new ways of thinking and behaving can have a positive impact on emotions and well being. Matt draws on a range of other techniques, including schema therapy, family systems therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, emotion focussed therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, communication skills training, and existential therapy. He focuses particularly on developing a positive therapeutic relationship with patients (and where relevant their families), as research suggests that this is one of the most important aspects of therapy.
